How To: Depot Urban Decay Primer Potion

At 11 quid a pop, I'd like to think I get the most out of this product. Urban Decay disagrees. If you have the old version of UDPP, you may have heard about how much product is wasted due to the poor design of the packaging. I'll be honest, I'm not 100% convinced the new wand makes much of a difference so will be depotting all Urban Decay Primer Potions in future. I know about the new pro tube but really, I'm not sure I'd use it all. I may give Too Faced Shadow Insurance a go when I've used this up.

So, to get started - disinfect everything. You'll need a disinfected serrated knife, a disinfected container (I'm re-using my Lush lip balm pot) and disinfected hands. Did I mention you need to disinfect EVERYTHING?! A spritz of alcohol over everything will suffice.

1. Firmly take hold of the base of the tube and place it on its side.
2. Remove the wand and cut through the widest part of the tube until you can separate the two sections. It's actually very easy to cut through.

Check out how much is still in there! And I thought this was empty! There was literally nothing coming off the wand when I used this.

3. Use the wand to scoop out the product and transfer it to your chosen container. The more air tight the better.

4. That's it! Stick a label on it if you wish.

  1. A few months ago a UD rep told me that they are changing the packaging to tubes and that regular size tubes will be available in early 2011. I guess the professional size tube is just a teaser?

Either way, thanks for this tutorial! I highly recommend NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base.

  2. Awesome, thanks for letting me know!

Will check out the NARS counter next time I drop by Liberty. I have little luck finding a good neutral shadow base so stocked up on UDPP only to find out about so many other good ones!

  3. I read in a blog sometime this year that de-potting would make the UD dry faster..><

  4. It probably will but I use it daily, sometimes twice a day and get through it quite quickly. Fingers crossed I won't waste any! As long as it's in an air tight container, it should be alright!

  5. You always mentioned a spritz of alcohol in your posts. Where did you get yours? Is there a specific brand or something? I know alcohol is a really generic term for hydrocarbons with a hydroxyl group, so would really appreciate knowing what you use.

Also, I love reading posts where people show just how much product is still left in the tube (esp UDPP!). I cut open my moisturiser a week ago cos I loved it too much to let go and there was still so much around the neck area. Would have been criminal to throw it away!

  6. I buy a 70% Isopropyl alcohol, the brand name of the bottle I'm using right now is Benjamins but I usually just buy what's available/cheapest. If I remember I need some while at the drugstore or supermarket I'll pick it up there, if not there's a pharmacy next door to where I live. I just transfer it into a small spray bottle and it makes it really easy to use.

Any thick cream or liquid in anything but a soft squeeze tube/bottle will have a lot of waste unfortunately. Wasted foundation is my pet peeve! Even the pump bottles don't get it all out.

  7. This is a great idea, it's insane to see how much is left in there, what a waste!
